Bongiwe Pityi

General Manager, O.R. Tambo International Airport

Bongiwe Pityi is the first female general manager of O.R. Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg, South Africa, one of the busiest in the region.A lawyer by profession, she practiced law before deciding to join the aviation industry.

She began her aviation career in 2000 at the Airports Company South Africa,which owns and operates several airports in Africa and other parts of the world, working as manager for Landslide and Car Park Operations.

After five years, she was promoted as assistant general manager at Durban International Airport where she stayed for seven years before moving on to manage the operations of the King Shaka International Airport, the first Greenfield airport in South Africa.

In 2010, she became the general manager of the King Shaka International Airport. And in 2012, she was sent to Guarulhos International Airport in Sao Paulo, Brazil and formed part of the Airports Company South Africa technical team.

Pityi is described as level headed and a strategic thinker. She studied Bachelor of Arts at University of Cape Town. She took up her Law Degree majoring in International Law and Legal Studies at the University of Natal.
