Ametek MRO AEM is tracking thousands of aircraft medical kit parts using a bespoke kit processing software developed by its Aeromedic division. Essentially, this tracks the expiration date and batch number of every first aid component in the kits. The bespoke system was developed solely by AEM with a specialist IT developer and integrates with AEM’s ERP system, handling the manufacture, repair and refurbishment of all Aeromedic kits. The system supports more than 200,000 processed kits a year for several major airline carriers worldwide, according to Steven Rowley, engineering director at AEM. As Rowley explains, the system maintains a master database containing the contents of each individually serialized kit. He says technicians scan barcodes on the kits to recall individual contents, before inspecting and exchanging out the content as required. “Stock issuing is managed via touch screen, and upon completion of a kit refurbishment, the system automatically produces a new....

Nigerian carrier Ibom Air is looking to establish itself an MRO provider for the African continent, mirroring the likes of EgyptAir, Ethiopian Airlines and Kenya Airways. Ibom Air, which has historically been a Bombardier CRJ900 operator, is a regional-government owned airline that launched operations in June 2019. Late last year, the Uyo-based carrier received the first of 10 direct-ordered Airbus A220-300s, joining its fleet of five CRJ900s and two A320s. “At Ibom Air, we made a decision that we're going to do our maintenance at home,” Ibom Air COO George Uriesi said, speaking on a recent African Airlines Association webinar. “We're already almost totally able to maintain our CRJ900 fleet. We're almost there. Everything we need to do on it, we can do here, except for just a couple of things that we must take the aeroplane out for. We're going do the same thing with the Airbus A220.” Uriesi....
China’s business jet market may have shrunk, but ExecuJet Haite’s general manager, Paul Desgrosseilliers, foresees a gradual rebound, buoyed by an uptick in overseas visitors at the company’s Tianjin facility. Now, with a second maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) center at Beijing’s mega-hub, Daxing International, Desgrosseilliers is optimistic about the increased potential for growth and opportunities. “We've always served the Beijing market the best we could through Tianjin. At Beijing Capital, the available facilities, parking, and access are quite limited. Providing maintenance support to the fleet has always been challenging due to these constraints,” Desgrosseilliers told AIN. “We don’t have those restrictions at Daxing.” Slated to open in the second quarter, discussions for the new MRO took place with Capital Airport Holding Business Aviation Management (CBM) over the pandemic. Last month, the two sides finalized the agreement with the aim to establish Daxing as a world-class business aviation hub. ExecuJet....
The Texas city of Sugar Land aims to be the first base in a network of eVTOL air taxi services in the Greater Houston area under plans announced last week with Wisk Aero. Recently, city officials signed a partnership with the Boeing subsidiary to select a location at Sugar Land Regional Airport for a vertiport that could be used by Wisk’s autonomous eVTOL aircraft. According to Wisk, its role in initiating advanced air mobility operations in the city—which is 20 miles southwest of downtown Houston—could lay the groundwork for similar facilities to be established in other parts of a metro area that has a population of 7.3 million. The company, which is exhibiting this week at Heli-Expo 2024, will provide technical leadership, while city officials handle planning, policy work, and community engagement. “The Greater Houston area is experiencing some of the highest population growth in the country, which calls for....
Rocket Lab says it could launch its first Neutron rocket before the end of the year as it outlines a long-term vision for the company that involves its own satellite constellation. In a February earnings call to discuss the company’s fourth quarter and 2023 financial results, Rocket Lab executives said development of its Neutron medium-lift reusable rocket was on schedule and budget, with a goal of a first launch before the end of the year. “Right now, we have a schedule that closes for a launch by the end of the year,” Peter Beck, chief executive of Rocket Lab, said of Neutron. “But, we’ve got a lot of testing to get through.” In the call, he outlined the progress the company was making on various components of Neutron, such as avionics and structures, as well as construction of Neutron’s launch pad, Launch Complex 3 on Wallops Island, Virginia. However, the....
Guardian Mobility has expanded its product line of airborne connectivity terminals, with the G6 and G6-S Certus satcoms now approved on Iridium’s Next satellite network. The terminals operate on the mid-band of the Next system with bi-directional 88 Kbps transmission speed. “We can support applications such as live video, automated flight following, real-time images, health monitoring, and more while significantly lowering operational costs,” according to Guardian Mobility COO Stephane Momy. Guardian claims the “G6 is the world’s first and only truly mid-band bi-directional 88/88 Kbps terminal in an all-in-one design.” Momy added, “This product fills a gap in the mobile satellite communications market with the optimal bandwidth for its size, weight, and power." The G6-S has the same capabilities and features as the G6 but can accommodate an external antenna configuration for the UAV/drone and high-altitude airplane markets.

Oregon-based Hillsboro Heli Academy has gained examining authority from the FAA, allowing the flight training provider to evaluate and certify its students’ proficiency. This eliminates the need to schedule students with an independent designated pilot examiner and makes the training process more efficient. According to the Flight Schools Association of North America, only 29 of the 521 FAA-certificated pilot schools are approved to hold examining authority for at least one of their courses. Hillsboro Heli Academy, a division of Hillsboro Aero Academy, is an FAA-approved Part 141 flight school and offers training from private pilot through flight instructor. The school operates a fleet of Robinson R22 and R44 helicopters, as well as helicopter simulators, at its base in Troutdale, Oregon. “We are thrilled to have earned examining authority from the FAA,” said general manager Jared Friend. “This achievement reflects our unwavering dedication to providing top-tier flight training and our commitment....
