Dr. Bonginkosi Emmanuel Nzimande

Born in Edendale near Pietermaritzburg on April 14, 1958, Dr.  Bonginkosi  Emmanuel Nzimande i s a n accomplished South African politician who currently heads the Ministry of Transport, the lead agency regulating the country's land, sea and aviation industries.

Prior to becoming the Minister of Transport, Dr. Nzimande was the Minister for Higher Education and Training (2009 to 2017). He has also served as the General Secretary of the South African Communist Party since 1998.

Dr. Nzimande has a Ph.D. in philosophy specializing in sociology. He came out st rongly agai nst proposals for nat i onali zat i on at t he COSATU conference in June 2011, stating that it is not “inherently progressive” as it depended on which class interests were being advanced.

Dr. Nzimande attended the Roman Catholic School, Henryville, and then Plessiers Lower Primary School before going to Mthethomusha School in Edendale, the first school in the area established under the new Bantu education system. He matriculated in 1975 at Georgetown High, Edendale.
