Sunil Bhaskaran, a Tata Steel veteran, is the new Chief Executive and Managing Director at Air Asia India, a low-cost airline jointly owned by Tata Group and AirAsia Berhad of Malaysia. The appointment was made on October 18, 2018 & he took charge on November 15.

“With India's aviation sector growing at a rapid pace, we are confident his (Bhaskaran) extensive experience, ability to drive performance and work seamlessly with all stakeholders will be a great asset for AirAsia India,” says S. Ramadorai, AirAsia India Chairman.

AirAsia is the first foreign airline to set up a subsidiary in India and it marked Tata's return to the aviation industry after 60 years, having ceded Air India in 1946. The airline plans to increase its fleet to 21 by the year's end which will make it eligible to flyoverseas.

AirAsia India's new CEO, Bhaskaran, was the vice president corporate services at Tata Steel based in Jamshedpur. He is also the chairman of the board at Jusco and Jamshedpur Football Club.

Bhaskaran completed his BTech from IIT Delhi in 1985 and his post-graduate studies in Management from IIM, Kolkata in 1987.
