New API Program Tackles Retention in Business Aviation

Aviation Personnel International (API) has introduced API WorkWell, a two-phase wellness program aimed at tackling retention issues in business aviation workplaces. This consulting service is designed to assess workplace health, enhance leadership, and improve team dynamics.

API highlights that employee retention is a pressing concern in the industry. Based in Savannah, Georgia, the company specializes in business aviation recruitment and HR solutions. They developed this service to offer aviation leaders data-driven insights and actionable recommendations.

“API WorkWell is crafted for business aviation leaders who recognize that a thriving workplace culture is intentional—it begins with leadership and requires ongoing evaluation, management, and enhancement,” stated Jennifer Pickerel, president of API.

The program’s first phase involves both qualitative and quantitative assessments through anonymous team feedback. API uses organizational psychology expertise to analyze this data, providing a diagnostic report that highlights organizational strengths, areas for improvement, and potential risks. These findings are then benchmarked against industry peers.

In the second phase, API delivers a tailored implementation plan, offering personalized coaching from aviation workforce specialists to help leaders implement changes and achieve sustainable improvements.

API CEO Sheryl Barden noted that the program addresses key challenges in today’s aviation labor market. “Business aviation organizations today face unprecedented workforce challenges, including a persistent talent shortage and rising compensation,” Barden explained. “Simply increasing pay isn’t a sustainable solution. Loyalty is built through great leadership, not just higher salaries.”

API’s approach underscores the importance of third-party assessments in fostering psychological safety, allowing employees to provide honest feedback. Participants in beta testing reported feeling more comfortable sharing concerns with API than with internal HR departments.

The program targets various organizational aspects, such as leadership alignment, role clarity, communication enhancement, safety culture improvement, and operational efficiency. Aviation leaders receive guidance on implementing changes to policies, organizational structure, and management practices.
