Rodger Foster, Airlink’s CEO and Managing Director since its founding in 1992, will step down at the end of March 2025. Reflecting on his tenure, Foster said, “It has been a privilege to have led Airlink through what has been an exciting, at times very challenging, but ultimately rewarding journey. After more than three decades in the post, it is time to hand over the flight controls to my successor.”
Engelbrecht to Take Over Leadership
De Villiers Engelbrecht, Airlink’s current Chief Financial Officer with over 20 years of experience at the airline, will assume the CEO role from April 1, 2025. Foster praised Engelbrecht, stating, “De Villiers is widely respected in the industry and has worked alongside me, helping to steady Airlink, repurpose it, and put the airline on a course for sustainable growth.”
Engelbrecht played a key role during critical periods, including Airlink’s separation from South African Airways (SAA) and navigating the COVID-19 crisis. “He has hands-on exposure to all key elements of the airline business and has the support of our executive team, management, and external stakeholders,” Foster added.
Airlink’s Growth Under Foster
Founded by Foster and Barrie Webb during South Africa’s political transformation, Airlink capitalized on deregulation to become a dominant player in regional aviation. Today, the airline operates a fleet of 65 Embraer aircraft and carried over 4 million passengers on 85,000 flights in 2024.
Qatar Airways Partnership
In August 2024, Airlink’s strong performance led Qatar Airways to acquire a 25% equity stake. Speaking on the deal, Qatar Airways CEO Engr. Badr Mohammed Al-Meer said, “Our investment in Airlink demonstrates our confidence in its resilience and in Africa’s potential.”
Foster’s Legacy and Future Role
Foster highlighted Airlink’s robust position: “Airlink is a flourishing and resilient business, with a strong balance sheet and commercial partnerships with many of the world’s leading airlines. None of this would have been possible without the tireless support of our dedicated and professional team.”
Though stepping down as CEO, Foster will remain a shareholder and serve as a non-executive director, continuing his association with the airline as it enters its next chapter. “I am confident that under De Villiers’ leadership, Airlink will continue to soar to new heights,” Foster concluded.
