Why are the lights aboard dimmed?

The cabin crew turn down the lights for takeoff and landing for your eyes to adjust to the darkness, in case of an emergency occurring which requires you to leave the aircraft quickly. If your eyes are adapted to the dark, you will be able to find the emergency exit lights and therefore exits easily.
