Of almost 30,000 pilots in the UK, fewer than 5% are women, but one aviator has set up a support network in a bid to help others get their wings. When Katherine Moloney began flying, she did not know any other female pilots. Keen to connect with likeminded women, she organized a lunch at Brighton City Airport. Forty people from across the industry showed up and Elevate Her Aviation was born. "We had the most amazing day," she said. "It was quite emotional. When I came away, I knew I wanted to take this forward in a more meaningful way." A year later, in May 2023, Ms Moloney launched Elevate Her - a website providing resources for aspiring pilots and a social media community that has quickly grown to about 1,000 people. Despite her father being a pilot, the 24-year-old grew up firmly believing aviation was not for her, but....

Boeing and NASA will collaborate with US airlines to advise the Sustainable Flight Demonstrator (SFD) project and development of the X-66A research aircraft. As part of a new sustainability coalition, Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Southwest Airlines and United Airlines will provide input on operational efficiencies, maintenance, handling characteristics and airport compatibility. "Hearing directly from the operators during all phases of the Sustainable Flight Demonstrator project will help us understand exact requirements and tradeoffs," said Todd Citron, Boeing chief technology officer. "The airlines' feedback will significantly contribute to the X-66A project learnings while furthering aviation sustainability." The X-66A will test the Transonic Truss-Braced Wing (TTBW) airframe configuration and will be built from a modified MD-90 aircraft at a Boeing facility in Palmdale, Calif. It is NASA's first X-plane focused on helping achieve its goal of net-zero aviation greenhouse gas emissions. When combined with expected advancements in propulsion systems,....

The Intelligence Advanced Research Projects Activity selected four vendors to develop technologies and new approaches for tracking small debris objects in space. A-Tech, Advanced Space, SRI International, and West Virginia University Research Corporation won four-year contracts of undisclosed value for the Space Debris Identification and Tracking (SINTRA) program. The four vendors were selected through a competitive Broad Agency Announcement. IARPA, an agency under the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, said that the four companies will develop technologies and methods to detect, track and characterize miniature space debris. “Resulting technologies hold the potential to protect manned spacecraft and other valuable space assets from these compact threats, which are difficult to detect and track and can cause significant damage,” IARPA said. The agency said the goal of the SINTRA program is to fill gaps in current space debris-monitoring systems, which currently only track and monitor debris objects larger than four....
